Buckles, Here is some more material on that 1908 Barnum & Bailey date in Newport, including a notice of warning from the local Police Chief. Notice the lot scene photo that shows the side show banner as "the Outside Show”.

G’day Buckles,

A few days ago someone asked about when Tommy broke off his tusk? I first met Lee, Tommy and the girls back in March ’82 at the Detroit Shrine date, where I walked Mysore for Banners, Shovelled behind Bucky’s five elephants and slept nearby. The first photo I took during shows and the second promo photo Lee gave me showing how long Tommy’s tusks were before he broke one off and Lee cut off the second tusk to match the broken one.

I am trying to do something for my mother and to be completly honest i have grown up with dreams of circus and have always wanted to meet someone from those old movies of her ben and ana may in ruskin.

The Barnum elephant men wore turbans in parade and the Ringling men had white helmets.

This has to be Barnes Babe and Barnes Ruth but on the other hand it sure looks like the quarters in Peru.

Identified as Howes Great London 1922 but 1921 was the last season the Corp. used the Howes Title.
Interesting picture tho, elephant backing this Tab into position while the gentleman at left poles the wagon.

My wife sometimes checks out the Blog from her computer and mentioned that her family and the Hendersons were good friends and in fact two of her sisters Billie and Peggy were named after the two ladies pictured above.

She also talked about the time in 1952 Tommy O'Brien got Rex and her a job at the Memphis Zoo.
They parked their trailer at the Fairgrounds and one evening she heard some music coming from one of the buildings which turned out to be Rabbit Foot Minstrals in rehearsal.
She was fascinated by the dance numbers and astonished by the amount of time and repetition it took to put the show together. Dailey Bros. took one run-thru.
Having little money and being pregnant with Ben she visited regularly and was always made welcome.
She said she hated to see them leave to go on the road.
