Thayer pointed out the derivation of side show from "outside show", meaning a presentation outside of the pavilion [later the big top], years ago, in his Bandwagon article about activity on the lot.
And note the girl across the street eyeing the young vendor! As well, note a pit show across from the side show. People forget that even big shows had these--RBBB carried one in the 1920s and here we see it on B&B. Dick Flint Baltimore

I believe you are right. Probably a local vendor trying to make some exta money.
