It will be easy to run away and join the circus this summer - if you live in Brooklyn. The Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey circus plans to hire hundreds of Brooklyn residents when it hits the Coney Island Boardwalk on June 18. Beginning next month, circus officials will accept applications for jobs ranging from usher and ticket taker to construction worker and security guard, a spokeswoman said. And rest assured: Aside from some janitors, none of the employees will be required to clean up after the elephants. "Certainly not in the elephant or animal area, but there might be people cleaning up the ring itself," said circus spokeswoman Barbara Pflughaupt. Circus officials said they have not settled on an application process yet. But the jobs are more back room than Big Top. The exciting positions - motorcycle riding, lion taming, clowning around and acrobatics - have already been filled by the professionals. "This is crucial for the area, which has gone without regeneration for years," said Lynn Kelly, Coney Island Development Corporation president. The circus' 12-week engagement would pump $10 million into the local economy, Kelly said. Adding to Coney Island's economy, officials said that 110 cast and crew members of the famed circus will live in Coney Island for the duration of the event. "They'll be living working and playing in Coney Island - all of it," Pflughaupt said.

Here she is as a young girl with one of the circus elephants. From Jim Cole: Buckles, I just got these photos of the John Robinson Circus elephants in from a 16 year old girl named Erin from Terrace Park, OH. She is with a youth circus, a youth CFA member and a reporter for the Circus4Youth website. I believe she got these photos from her grandmother and her local historical society. Her entire article on the John Robinson's Circus with photos will be on www.circus4youth.org next week. It is really great to see someone from that age group take an interest in circus history.

Robinson Military Elephants #1

When the Robinson family closed their circus following the 1911 season, most of the equipment was sold but the elephants were so well trained that they were retained. Their original trainer, Tim Buckley, had trained them to do an assortment of skits such as the "barber shop", play musical instruments and a military number whereby a war scene was enacted, a cannon fired, a soldier rescued from the battlefield, the German flag lowered and replaced by the "Stars and Stripes". This number was so well received that "Military Elephants" became their title.

This picture brings to mind a message I received recently from Toby Styles which read in part:: "How did the custom of giving military titles to animal trainers start? I realize that it is a sign of respect richly deserved, but I was always curious about how it started (perhaps due to the military looking wardrobe that once was the fashion). I recall visiting with Bert Pettus in Calgary when he was announced as Col Bert Pettus, Bert said something to the effect " You would think after all the years I have been doing this I would at least be a General or a Field Marshall by now". "I think you are right about the military titles coming from the attire worn by early elephant trainers. My dad once told me that one old timer he knew had one medal on his chest that stated "Dog Catcher". He also was referred to as Colonel Woodcock, in his youth he had Communist leanings and his favorite fictional character was the "Red Colonel" featured in Saturday Evening Post. On the Floto Show they started calling him "Colonel" and and his buddy John Smith "Bolshevik Smitty" You may be interested to know that Wally Ross named the big Vargas male elephant "Colonel" after my dad. It later became "Colonel Joe". The only legitimate "Colonel" I know is John Herriott who is a certified Kentucky Colonel. Unfortunately I never made it above SP4!" Buckles

I received several more letters trying to disprove this which I promptly threw in the trash.
