Autograph #1 (From Jack Ryan)

autograph #1, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Buckles,

My task for the weekend is to get my huge quantity of circus books/programs into better order. As I did, found these autographs which your readers might enjoy.

The Ringling Family Tree is from the inside cover of THE CIRCUS KINGS by Henry Ringling North and Alden Hatch, published in 1960.

Jack, I've always thought you had the best job in the Circus. You got to work with the owners, the artists, the behind-the-scenes people -- and then tell their stories/the story of the circus in beautiful words and pictures. How lucky can you get? -- ToddP

Todd,

Thanks. It WAS fun. Would not change anything. Sometimes a bit difficult, sure. (These "owners" are not always the finest people in the world! Our job is to make them SEEM that way!)

Henry Ringling North WAS terrific -- a sophisticated and urbane gentleman who could not have been nicer to a punk First of May like me.

Thanks for the comment. Yes, I am lucky.

Jack

Once as a kid, I sent a Christmas card to His Imminence, John Ringling North, just after seeing the GSOE picture. Obviously, JRN couldn't be bothered, but the return card was signed by Henry. I had occasion at times to write him again, thinking that at 10 or 12, he might find a job for me. A nice, but brief letter always came back, one explaining they couldn't place someone so young, and I soon had a number of letters and cards signed by Henry Ringling North. I met him in Fresno. He walked in with two big German Shepherds, and he was elegantly done out in a three-piece suit. He was gracious in spending time talking about Beatty, Codona, and Leitzel. But when he inquired who was working then at Jungleland, I mentioned Eugene "Arky" Scott, and he denied Arky had ever been on the Ringling show. I quietly suggested he was in the picture, and HRN said, "No, we never had him over here." Can anyone with better insight explain this?
