Three outstanding elephants "Myrtle", "Bonnie" and "Babe". At the auction, after the show had folded in 1917, all three were purchased by Charlie Sparks where they remained as long as the Sparks Show existed and in 1932, like so many other elephants, absorbed into the Ringling herd. I remember "Babe", she died years later in Hugo, Oklahoma at the Fairgrounds while Little Bob Stevens was wintering there in 1951. Kelly Miller had the hide tanned which he had made into sofa's, foot stands, etc. he even gave my dad a pair of moccasins which he promptly gave away. "Babe's" head was mounted behind the "Silver Dollar Bar" in Kelly's newly constructed estate "Dun Rovin'" however all was lost when later gutted by a fire." Buckles

A young guy named Chief would take about a half dozen old elephants to an outdoor picket line each morning where they would spent the day. One morning, as they passed in front of "Kernaudi", she suddenly broad sided "Myrtle", knocking her completely through the fence where she lay motionless. A futile attempt was made to get her back on her feet but she had already given up. The Krall was closed to the public and she was later euthanized by the Vets, covered with a tarp and that evening dragged out back and buried. "Big Modoc" had died just before I arrived, it was quite a stir, and "Big Babe" died the day the train pulled out for NYC. Three grand old ladies, it was as tho they went on cue, aware that the tented days were gone." Buckles

img097, originally uploaded by bucklesw1. Buckles, This just gets a little more confusing all the time. I found this newspaper cut today in The Lethbridge Herald ( Canada ) from June 11, 1929. I then found the following article in the Oakland Tribune on May 4, 1929. CIRCUS BRINGS WONDERS HERE With all the sounds and sights and smells of any first rate circus, the Al G. Barnes Circus came to Oakland yesterday to delight the hearts of young and old for three days. The vast tent quarters are at Forty-fifth street and San Pablo Avenue. The center of interest in the menagerie are Tusko and the Mighty Tusko, monster elephants, while the hippo's cage, the dens of the larger cats and the monkeys all held the attention of the throngs that packed the tents yesterday afternoon and evening. Captain John Meyers with his 19 trained Bengal tigers, Miss Bobby Taylor wrestling a tiger,and the Misses Alma Taylor and Velda in their respective animal acts. The Davenport family of riders offer an excellent direction while Mack Smith and his riders were enjoyable. Miss Patricia Clancy has charge of the herds of performing elephants. Miss Bert??? Matlock in her slide for life, Miss Babe Laieaurmen, aerialist, and Miss Tetis Robinson on the high wire all win the pleasure of their audiences. Al G. Barnes has gathered his largest and best aggregation together in his many years of show business and his production, Aladdin and the Parade of Gold, to the last act is enjoyable.The circus will close it's season here tomorrow evening. I think the ad was intended to say what it says. Tusko staying at home probably couldn't change the advertising cuts by then. However the article which is an actual observation of the show says Yes he was there. The last sentence throws me though. Did the Barnes show close a tour there in early May of 1929 or is this just city-slicker lingo, saying they are done in this town on May 5th? I received an email from the STL Zoo that Donn Gibson had died. Nobody had any details about where or when. Donn took over the St. Louis Zoo Elephant Show in 1970 and trained and presented elephants until a year before the show was closed, 1991, and he retired. Donn came to the Zoo in 1961 after teaching high school biology in Mississippi. After a short stint on the grounds crew he became one of Floyd Smith's assistants in the Elephant Show. He was a quiet, friendly man with a ready smile. He didn't visit many shows but I'm sure some of the blog readers saw him at the Zoo or at least know about him. Jim

McDermott, dead at 88 Bernard Francis Xavier McDonald, M.D., J.D., noted physician and attorney who specialized in medical malpractice legal matters died in his sleep on Friday morning September 28 from natural causes. He was a life-long resident of New York City where his practice grew into a powerhouse of medical and legal knowledge from a humble one-man office in the 1940's. Former associate, Lee (Levi) Sternberg, attorney now retired remembers, "The only job I ever had was working for Dr. McDermott. He was demanding but respectful; temperamental but very kind and he was loyal to his employees." McDermott was known as a commanding presence in the court room, an elegant dresser and a fine orator. Says Sternberg, "The doctor would look at pages of notes we prepared and within 10 minutes he would have captured all the details to his memory. He would stand before the jury and with the skill of an accomplished Shakespearean-trained actor present his side of the argument. I would like to emphasis that he never talked above or below his audience but he talked to them, eyeball to eyeball." On returning back to our office after a successful day in court, our remaining colleagues would ask, "How did it go?" And our standard response was, "Bob Hope only wishes he could play a room like Dr. McDermott played that court room." As the firm grew Dr. McDermott expanded his office and started a tradition of being chauffeured everywhere. While many in the profession made snide remarks about his new status symbol, there was a heart-breaking reason for the private car. His youngest daughter, Talulla, was severely handicapped mentally. When she was 8 she chased the family's pet cat into the street and was struck and killed by a truck. Dr. McDermott observed the entire accident from the window. Her ran to her side but she was already dead and he held her in his arms till an ambulance arrived. The accident moved him so much that he refused to drive for fear of being the driver in a similar situation. Dr. McDermott was married to the former Marie Louise (Mary Lou) Fitzmorris for 58 years. He is survived by daughters: Bridget, Bernadette, Siobhan, Honora and sons: Brendanus and Malachy. He was predeceased: daughter: Talulla and son: Seamus. Mrs. McDermott's family was associated in a professional capacity with Mrs. Florenz Ziegfeld (Billie Burke) where the McDermotts started to cultivate their many friendships with the world of show business: theatre, ice shows and circuses. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
