When big, beautiful show's are talked about, I think the one Paul Kaye took to Japan in 1983 consisting of Rix's bears, Carmen Hall's Baboon's, Hawthorn tigers, Bobby Moore's dog's, Johnson's elephant's, Flying Redpath's, etc. need's to be included in the conversation. Sold out 3 month engagement, prior to GSOE going bust in the same country. Wade Burck

Another animal spectacular that we will never see again. Who could have even imagined that we'd be saying that just a few years ago?

Japanese circuses still play to packed, sold out houses daily year 'round in 2007. There are no animal rights activists screaming over the fence with picket signs here, as it would be considered very rude and impolite.

Other shows sometimes don't do well here simply because they are not Japanese, and do not understand Japanese protocol. Foreign performers can get along alright in this country, (providing they mind their own business) but foreign management styles sometimes put off the locals- being viewed as arrogant, abrasive and pushy (behavior which doesn't fly in Japan). It's mandatory to go out of your way not to offend people, even inadvertently. Demands are never made; only requests.

It's a very closed society which foreigners can live and work in, but only if the rules are understood, adhered to, and respected.

John Illig often talks about Albert Rix and his time spent learning from this man he so admired.
