Perhaps it was this film that “inspired” the idea of spray-painting performing elephants back in late 1950s-early 1960s. They had some elephants painted up just like these for the opening of the Cleveland Grotto Circus back in 1964. One of the theater critics objected, saying it was too much like dyeing baby chicks for Easter. Management must have taken this criticism to heart, since when I saw the show a few days later, the elephants were back to their natural colors.
