In 1964, just before the GROTTO CIRCUS opened, the CLEVELAND PRESS ran a photo very similar to this one showing Jon “Tarzan” Zerbini with an elephant that was being spray-painted pink. (By the time I saw the show a week or so later, the elephants were back to their natural colors.) I seem to recall that in 1964, Zerbini also worked the Diano elephants in addition to his wild animal act. (It was the first time I saw Tommy perform.) The Woodcock Elephants were in the center ring that year, so Buckles should be able to elaborate on all of this.
We were in San Francisco with Jimmy Hetzer and PINK FLOYD was releasing a new album and wanted a PINK Elephant So Bobby found a painter from the San Jose local who painted Iona pink with food coloring. We took her downtown and they had Pink Champagne for the release so Bobby gets the water tub and we filled it for Iona. She really liked it.

Does anyone know what was used
as a colorant to spray on them
I once read that it was some sort of vegetable dye
