Crescent Park #2

For the record, the Crescent Park carousel contains sixty-one horses, one camel, two single coaches, and two double chariots. Most of the figures on this carousel were carved between 1905 and 1910 in the shop of Charles Looff. Fifty-six of the horses are jumpers. If you look closely, you can see the carousel’s Ruth und Sohn Style 38 band organ. (When I was there in 1971, the organ had already been converted from the original German cardboard book music system to music rolls.) Because of noise complaints from the carousel's operators and visitors, several of the ranks of pipes in the band organ were later disabled to reduce the music volume. In 1995, some of the carved instruments from the band organ’s facade were stolen.
