When Crescent Park closed in 1977, the City of East
Providence kept the carousel off of the auction block and it continues to
operate every summer. It was a declared
a National Historic Landmark in 1987.

Thank God somebody saved something.
Many of the carousels I photographed back in 1971 have since been moved, broken up and sold off piece-meal or, in one case, destroyed by fire. By the late 1960s-early 1970s many of the smaller, old time amusement parks were starting to disappear at an alarming rate. It was in the early 70’s that a number of prominent carousel fans/preservationists got together to form the NATIONAL CAROUSEL ASSOCIATION to help educate the public on old carousels and why they should be kept intact. Right about that time, more books about old carousels (and old amusement parks) started to appear. Incidentally, the carousel that was at CIRCUS WORLD was broken up and sold off piece-meal when that park closed.
Eric: Are you familiar with the jenny at Olympic Park in Irvington NJ? I rode it when I was a kid and years later read that it was a classic- I guess in the Fried book.
I believe that the Olympic Park carousel is the one that is now at Disney World in Florida.
