Your father is among the anointed to get her autograph. She was known for refusing to sign. In 1950, she was trying to separate two cubs, one of which was biting the ear of another, when the mother, Pasha, sank her fangs into Mabel's right hand and clawed her arm. For weeks, doctors feared amputation, but finally succeeded in her healing. She told me this: "If I start to make one letter, and this hand goes haywire, I'm embarrassed when I can't finish. Then people say, 'Oh, look, the poor old thing can't even write her name. Why don't they let her go?'" Looking feeble was among Mabel's great fears, so autographs were extremely rare. I know--at the last, I got her to sign photos for me, one of which looks down on this very posting.
