As to your question about grift on Robbins Bros. it was indeed conducted in the walled off section of the Side Show where after the last performance at night the gentlemen were invited to "smell the smoke and see the flame" during which time the grifters would set up shop. As they started to take down the top the game was moved outside and continued by aid of  a light bulb mounted on a pole and often concluded with an altercation and a visit from the police.
