That October 10, 1938 issue of LIFE also had a photo showing an elephant in the Geneva (Switzerland) Zoo that had been fitted with a gas mask in anticipation of the coming war. (The photo’s caption mentioned that once the elephant saw food, it torn the mask to shreds while trying to remove it.)
