Hilda’s ultimate fate was revealed in the October 10, 1938 issue of LIFE. As war clouds began to gather in Europe, an elephant from Germany was moved to the Brooklyn Zoo for safety. The article mentioned that it was replacing “the late Hilda,” whose death had been caused by being pushed into the moat. (The Woodcock files undoubtedly have information on all of these elephants.)

My knowledge of Zoo Elephants is very limited unless they had a circus or carnival connection.

I believe the new elephant may have been Astra, arriving in 1938, 2 years old, although I didnt know she came from Germany, is it mentioned in the article if she came from Hagenbecks in Hamburg? (Astra was one of the largest Hamburg beer breweries...)

Astra was eventually given as a gift from the Department Store "Abraham and Strauss".
