Christy Bros. Circus #12

Scan13409, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

Elephants L to R are "Babe", "Dixie", "Alice" and "Nero" in 1925. Lady in cart is Bessie Brashear Polk and attandant's name was "Rags". My dad wrote on the back: "Caradini Babe" Christy's first elephant purchased in 1920 from Caradini Vaudeville Troupe. "Bughouse Alice" originally from B&B via Campbell Bros., Atturbury Bros., Howes Great London and several other shows. "Dixie was one of three punks imported in 1925 and "Nero" (Yank Show Babe) had been imported by Fred Buchanan in 1919 then with several Corporation shows before coming to Christy in 1923 who already had two "Babes" hence the name "Nero". Somewhere along the line she gotten crippled up and was sold to Mexico at the close of the '25 season.

Chang believed Caradini Babe came to Christy after a stay on Hagenbeck-Wallace (probably a short stay) and that her vaudeville days were before that. She was said to be Jerry Mugivan's second elephant, I assume Major being his first.
