In July 1927, Mrs. Benchley was appointed the Zoo’s Executive Secretary with control of operations. Although she had no previous experience working with animals, she spent a great deal of time talking with the keepers and zoo veterinarians, and got to know many of the animals personally. On several occasions, she even served as a foster mother for baby animals born at the Zoo that had been rejected by their mothers. |
