Mrs. Benchley continued Dr. Wegeforth’s policy of trading surplus animals to other zoos in exchange for animals that the Zoo needed but could not afford to buy.

Dr. Wegeforth was instrumental in organizing an animal trading program between zoos to circumvent the high prices being charged by animal dealers such as Frank Buck, Hagenbeck & Sons, and the Ruhe family.
