Another duty that Mrs. Benchley took over from Dr. Wegeforth was speaking before luncheon clubs and at other civic and educational events. Although she disliked public speaking, she soon became quite adept at it, and would often bring along zoo animals, such as the cheetah Bong. Because of her many public appearances, she soon became known locally as “the Zoo Lady.”
