Bronx Zoo #1 (From Eric Beheim)

Bronx Zoo-1, originally uploaded by bucklesw1.

About 30 years ago, I acquired a 10-minute film titled WHO’S WHO IN THE BRONX ZOO. This film has no copyright date, and the footage looks like it might have been shot in the late 1930s or early 1940s. (It is mentioned in a 1948 catalogue of educational films that is posted on line, so it dates back at least that far.) It is sufficiently obscure so that even YouTube doesn’t have it available for downloading.

From time to time, Buckles has posted insightful comments about the Bronx Zoo that were submitted by Blog readers knowledgeable about the Zoo and its history. Perhaps they can supply us with more information about this film and/or help to identify who and what are shown here.

These images, by the way, were all scanned from 16mm film frames, which are even smaller than View-Master images. If they’re appearing here at a size big enough to see, then Shannon has worked more of his magic.

We just got home late yesterday from 4 days in Hershey, Pa or I would have submitted this sooner.

Many answers to questions about the Bronx Zoo may be found in William Bridges, "Gathering of Animals (An Unconventional History of The New York Zoological Society)" Copyright 1974 by The New York Zoological Society.

In addition to much information many wonderful photos, including Alice the elephant "answering the phone" are to be found throughout.
