Did Mr Schmitt bring over some hands from Europe with him, or have to use the help already around the show?
Richard Shipley was in charge of the elephants in 1947 and his assistants were Vernon Duffy, Fred Logan, Richard Durant and Al Vidbel.
Freddy told me that while unloading in Pittsburgh, a yard engine with a baggage car carrying five elephants stopped nearby.
Logan said he and a few guys went over to check it out and standing in the doorway was Hugo, a lady and two Great Dane dogs.
After they got the herd to the lot, Concello told Shipley to make room on the picket since North had just bought this act.
When Hugo arrived, he put his elephants in the menagerie and while at the cook house, his wardrobe trunk was dropped off at the elephant men's dressing tent. When he returned he discovered that his trunk had been opened and the contents scattered about. Freddy said "All Hell broke loose" just like brawl in a Western movie and he left marks on about half the men in the department.
Afterward his trunk was moved to the men's dressing room and a temporary truce was made but about two weeks later it was decided to send Hugo and his elephants to Sarasota and since the center ring elephant act customarily was an 8-act he was allowed to pick out 3 Ringling elephants and he chose "Minnie", "Dolly" and the large African "Sudan".
I have a couple of pictures of Hugo practicing the 1948 act in the outdoor arena in Sarasota.
When the show came into quarters at the end of the season, the word was out that Hugo was taking over the entire herd and most of the old guard blew. Shipley went to the Beatty Show.
How long was Mr Schmitt the captain?
Is the Dutchman that the Col. spoke of Baptist Schreiber? Arky was involved in this too, right?
FYI
Steve Fanning was from Milton, WI and his family still runs an excavating company from that small city. That is where my wife and I still run a medium sized antiques mall, that many of you have visited.
The "Dutchman" referred to was Hugo Schmitt.
