Anyone here ever find out for sure just when and where "Hebe" aka "Babe" of the Barnum&Bailey show died? She was of course an elephant of historic note, having been the dame of "Columbia".(first elephant born in America,to survive more then a few years anyway). Its very curious why it doesnt seem to have been recorded anywhere. I always wondered if perhaps it was her that died at the National zoo in the early 1930's. She would have been ancient, around 70 years at least, but not impossible. Other people say it was another Babe that died there. However according to newspaper accounts, the original"Babe" (Old Babe) of the Ringling show, their first elephant, reportly died in Baraboo November 1915.
Is this the Martin Lacey that trained the bouncing lion for the Flyboys movie or was it his father? The person taking the hit from the lion in the film looks very much like the younger Lacey.
For those who don't know the story, Flyboys is about a group of American pilots that flew French planes in WWI before the US entered the war. This squadron had a lion that was their mascot that was past from one pilot to the next as they were killed.
That's where Highflyer got his nickname! Never knew his real name? I do know why he was nicknamed it tho! You could get stoned if ya were down wind from him!
