42nd Street between Broadway & 8th Avenue

once had Vaudeville Legit & film theaters

nearly the entire block but they fell into

great decline in the 60s & 70s when sleaze

central took over & it became shameful

Disney Theatrical a division

of the "Big Mouse" company

& helped turn the entire area

around back to a flourishing

entertainment district along

Disney's "Aladdin" is the current

occupant in this 1745 seat dark

"New Amsterdam Theater"

(my original title is incorrect)

Henry Hudson from Holland named the

city in tribute to his homeland

The river the harbor & other stuff

still bears his name but the city

became "New York City"

In 1974, I walked the entire island--except for the Bronx--I was brave, but not that stupid. Without exaggeration, every other door in most of Manhattan was X-rated something. Thugs lunged out from doorways to literally grab people by the arm to shove them into sex shows, porn houses, or brothels of descriptions beyond that of the ordinary whorehouse--right there in Times Square. Locals were somewhat protected by keen awareness, but tourists were spotted for their ignorance and victimized. I kept well out of reach, but can still feel the shudder of sleaze from those streets. Needless to say, the Families had this all mobbed-up until Rudy Giuliani got into Gracie Mansion, and began the hard task of a successful clean-up campaign.
