The story goes that John never collected his pay. He didn't need it, as the show had all he wanted in life, and he had no habits to support. He asked D.R. Miller to invest his accrued stipends in a way to provide a decent resting place for show guys like himself, who had only the circus as family. This Showmans Rest in his enduring legacy, for a man we know Rests In Peace.
