Those seat wagons were finger smashers. You had to watch yourself or get hurt.

They were in a league with that Clyde Beatty cat tunnel, which I still call that knuckle-busting son-of-a-bitch.

Beatty show vets recall when Herbie Weber, having worked with Chata in the Los Latinos Duo wire act, and The Great Huberto Slide For Life, doubled at night as Short-side Pusher. For new readers, that man bosses his help, mostly town kids, to fold and load the bibles onto 96 Wagon--the heaviest on the lot. Part of this job meant Herbie swept the bibles with a janitor's broom, allowing him to pocket all the loose money he came to. BTW, 96 routinely got a ticket at weigh stations for being the most overloaded.

When Mr. Beatty left in mid-'64 for his first cancer surgery, he did not return that season. I had been his driver, but with his departure, I shotgunned in 96 with 1st Trumpet Tommy Napoli. This was a continuation of my education, since Tommy was among those who really did know where the bodies were buried.
