James Maitland Stewart was the highest ranking of the Hollywood stars who served in uniform. In the Army Air Corps, in WW II, he was a flight instructor. Next, he flew bombing missions over Germany which vary in number, but in most accounts are more than 100. He continued to serve on combat missions over Viet Nam, to the immense surprise of those in the craft who looked up to see then-Colonel James Stewart coming aboard. He retired as a Brigadier General, outranking anyone else in Hollywood.
