Whenever we travel across country, we use Amtrak. (We’re train fans. Also, we dislike the many inconveniences and indignities associated with flying.) While it takes us a little longer to get to where we’re going, taking the train allows us to see the country at eye level. For overnight trips, we book a private bedroom on one of the sleeping cars. These bedrooms have their own shower, toilet and sink. Meals are included in the price of the ticket. Amtrak offers a travel points program that allows us to apply the points we earn from our trips towards future travel. We belong to an on-line group of train travelers called Amtrak Unlimited that has discussion forums about various aspects of train travel. Experienced train travelers respond to various questions and comments about using Amtrak. They also submit “trip reports” describing their experiences while traveling by train. (Several of our trip reports are posted there.) Our favorite Amtrak train is the “Southwest Chief,” which travels over the same route as Santa Fe “Chief” and “Super Chief,” the two trains that all the movie stars once rode on.
How do Amtrak prices compare to the airlines? Last time I did this sort of thing was 8n 1967 with 4 Army buddies. W went from Frankfurt to Berlin. Train was pulled by a steam locomotive. Loved that trip.

Bedrooms with plumbing conveniences
range in price similar to 1st class
flying on many similar routes
I try to do about 15 to 20 percent
of my domestic travel by train
Other than getting there my foreign
travel has a much higher percentage
If I'm reading your schedule right you have to wait almost 10 minutes in Kissimmee for the Strates train to go by, hope you have your camera ready.
Just went by the Strates rail yards
There seemed to be hundreds of flats
fully loaded ready for travel with
a number of trucks & trailers left
All freshly painted & top notch
Sorry no photos this trip as I was
told the train had left days ago
We had been doing fairly well yesterday
but I just woke up as we arrived in Cary
more than 2 Hours late at 10:25A
Similar to airline schedules railroad
timetables are merely suggestions
A great ride nontheless
Arrived at Washinton Union Station
a mere 2 hours & 52 minutes late
at 5:30P Eastern Daylight Time
