In the background we see one of the air conditioning wagons. They were in use in 1939, 40, 41, and 42. So, the photo is from one of those years. The air conditioning was John R North's effort to provide some relief to the patrons on hot summer afternoons. They essentially involved air blown over blocks of ice in the wagons.
A couple of accounts claim this A/C system worked only for those directly under one of the vents. A/C guys speak of "pulling" an area, meaning to remove the worst of the heat while adding forced refrigerated air. We find such engineering only minimally pulled that Ringling Big Top.
