MORE SEA LIONS

Note that the sea lion toward the bottom is not balancing the ball on its nose. Probably the trainer would toss the ball to the sea lion and the sea lion would bounce the ball off its nose back toward the trainer.

I haven't seen posters featuring ball balancing until about 1900, and Joseph Woodward was the trainer. After that ball balancing was the featured trick in most all sea lion acts. It was the trick that made sea lions unique, other animals didn't do balancing tricks ( but then sea lions can't jump on land, etc.) Ball balancing's not an easy or natural trick for sea lions, it takes time. However, once an animal has the basic idea you can do an act just on variations of balancing.
