tent every night & they

had to beef up the spool

Show owners sometimes did not think through, as they should have, the changes they sought.

Buckles posted photos and comments about the spool wagon Cap Curtis designed, which had the canvas being hauled off the side and dragged by horse teams across the lot. The resultant wear on the canvas brought Cap back to his drawing board, and many of his circus-specific innovations saved worlds of grief. When Cap's pen re-drew his concepts, better things worked, and workingmen celebrated.
