The exponents of this temple were my first introduction to Shriners sponsoring a circus. We played Lighthouse field with the Beatty show in '64, and Eddie Dullem warned one and all to prepare for the invasion of lot lice. The Shriners emerged drunk from their hospitality wagon, and roamed the lot in swarms by the dozens. They tried climbing the aerial rigging, thinking it funny to imitate chimpanzee noises. Others targeted the animal departments and became obstreperous when made to leave. A number of them were aggressive toward the circus women, resulting in loud indignation from the women and their men alike. I noticed that none among them stepped up to subdue this behavior, and my observations became more educated as our route cards led us to mostly Shrine dates. In towns where no red Fez showed up, we shared a collective day of gratitude.
This division of Shriners do not compare to those who dedicated themselves to funding their great hospitals and burns centers. These Shriners are embarrassed by those sponsoring circuses, and agree with the Masons that this faction should separate themselves from the full orders of the Shrine fraternity.
Nevertheless they still put on a Circus, replete with elephants, and the folks we met were nothing such as Roger described above. Hamid produces the show.
I should add that I do not believe, but not absolutely sure, that they use this building anymore. No offense Roger, just an observation from this past May.
Thankfully, with increased social awareness, one might not see so much of the boorish behavior from Shriners as in the past. A great outcry arose when the media exposed their claims of charity money actually going to sustain "local temple events", meaning private parties with refreshments.
I soured on Shriners around the Beatty show back then, and my outlook did not improve with those sponsoring other shows I was on, especially the ones on Hubert Castle. I'm grateful to see someone saying now that this is not so much the case.
