TIGHTS #12

Jules Leotard invented the flying act in 1859, on Circus Bouglione, in the very building that stands today. His wardrobe of tights quickly became adopted by aerial acts. Most girls today consider Leotards to simply mean their tights, and have no reflection on the man's name.

Next time you see TRAPEZE, watch for Burt Lancaster arguing with Tomas Gomez to prevail with the flying "two-act", and its purity, "since Leotard invented the trapeze, on this circus, a hundred years ago." The movie was shot in 1955 for a '56 release, but that's close enough. For this reason, and for all technical circus points in the dialog, TRAPEZE was the most accurately scripted circus film of them all.
