Welcome to Buckles Blog. This site is for the discussion of Circus History all over the world.
"Jennys" of all sizes were fun to work on like this 3 abreast with 2 rows of Jumper Horses I can recall every piece of them & where they go
Many of these rides back then used common sense engineering that could be taught to folks very quickly & easily
Chic: Did you travel with a Show?
Yes indeed Charles for the summer season of 1960 with Reithoffers main unit as I mentioned in the notes with today's 1st entry (above) I knew 3 generationms of Patrick Edward Reithoffer It was Pat Jr than managed the shows with his father in retirement back at the "Shrine Acres" site that was their headquarters in Dallas PA & Pat the 3rd was a hard working stiff like the rest of us
I believe it was the next summer that Pat the 3rd lost a leg from a thrown rod while driving a rig They were all 1st class folks
At that time there were 3 units on the road with both the main & 2nd as well as the "How-Reit" unit with white trucks owned jointly with Al Howard of Orange County Fair administration in Middletown NY
Reithoffer "The Aristocrat of Show Business" It was a great season indeed
During that summer I got to meet several of the Vivona Brothers of AofA They played along side the Beatty Show in Philly for several years later after the Strates Show
My accomodations as they were was the sleeper section of my boss Walt "Sputnik" Pamphilon's extended cab Cornbinder as the horse I drove had none at all Walt had a small trailer that he shared with a very cute girl from the concessions department His truck was an IH CO 220 & I drove an IH CO 200 that looked like 1 of Buckles & his Dad's
A year & a half later when I went out also as an asst electrician on the Broadway National Touring Company of "Lil Abner" I was in hog heaven with my very own tiny roomette on the show's train rented from NY Central with a bthroom & a shower at the end of the car "high cotton" Currently I'm graced to have both hot & cold running water inside our house
