This is early 1953, when Mabel and 7 tigers departed for Japan. The equipment seen here was not used at the Compound, but specially built for shipment by deckside cargo for the 30-day voyage across the Pacific. Mabel and husband Eddie Trees had the cages lashed against the rails of the deck, and could blast them clean with hoses that sent the soiled bedding and bones right over into the sea. Mabel's deal was that she teach the Japanese performers how to train and work tigers, and to leave this act with them.
Shortly after their arrival, Eddie Trees died, on March 4th, at age 67. Foreigners cannot be buried in Japan, so Mabel had to oversee Eddie's cremation. She scattered his ashes across Tokyo Bay, as she stated "to the four winds, over the Pacific". At her death, these instructions for herself were followed on April 24th, 1968.
