Warner Oland remains my favorite Charlie Chan. Today's fans may be surprised to learn he was born in Nyby, Sweden, in 1879. He starred in 16 Chan films for 20th Century-Fox, and was the most reliable of their bankable stars prior to the rise of Shirley Temple. In his mid-50s, his decline began with alcoholism and increasing dementia. He died of pneumonia in 1938, at age 58. The Chan series continued with Sidney Toler in the lead. A very young Keye Luke co-starred in most of these as the comedic Number One Son, sometimes supported by Mantan Moreland.
