The International Amphitheatre was located at 4220 South Halsted Street in Chicago, right next to the Union Stock Yard. Built in 1934, it was owned and operated by the Union Stock Yard. Its air-conditioned arena, which seated 10,000, was 237 feet long and 123 feet wide. In addition, there were two 2-story exhibit wings.

The primary purpose of the International Amphitheatre was to host the Union Stock Yard’s annual International Live Stock Exposition, which had first been presented in Chicago in 1900. The “International” was THE major live stock show of its day. It would open on the Saturday following the last Thursday in November and would run for 8 days. On exhibit would be 1650 head of top show cattle from the United States and Canada, 1000 head of fine sheep, around 700 head of fancy swine, and 450 head of draft, saddle and harness horses. The public response was tremendous and some 450,000 people would attend this event each year.

This was the first place I ever saw the Blue Show with Charly Baumann, Ursula Bottcher, and the Woodcocks. I delivered a young tiger here to Charly, that Ringling had purchased, who later became Prince a future mirrored ball tiger. Herta went with James C Hall and myself, with our freshly dyed blond hair and Buckles was quick to christen us "Eko and Iko." The young tiger was upset after the trip from Richmond in an airline kennel, and when I opened the door to show him to Charly he flew out of the cage and seized me by the toe of my boot, penetrating down to the foot. James C Hall and Herta had to pry him off and get him back in the cage. Needless to say I wish my first meeting with Charly had been a bit more glorious.......
