Chic...I also saw that hippo walk around on Cristiani-Wallace and was so impressed. First and last time I have ever seen a hippo walk the full length of the hippodrome track....
Good job nobody reached out to tough the hippo. The animals never know what is behind an unexpected touch, and you can't blame them.
When Roy Rogers rode Trigger around the seating perimeters of his rodeo audiences, to shake hands with admirers, he first made an announcement asking that no one try to touch Trigger, or tug at his mane of tail, as "Trigger might get antsy about such things, so please don't try to touch him, folks."

The only time I ever saw a
Hippo within a performance
was during a visit to the
"Cristiani Wallace Show" in
the early 60s on Long Island
under canvas where a Hippo
did a full track walk with
the attendant behind with
a long reed switch that he
never needed to utilize
A good length of time for
props or rigging to be set
The kiddies where either
thrilled or scared to be
within touching distance

Well it was indeed named for them
(although horses were implied)

"Touch" the hippo, I meant to say--not tough her.
I lied about "touching distance"
It was fairly centered on the track
It seemed very close to the kiddies
