There never was a Sally Rand
Ask Kenny Dodd about his memorable visit with her.
On October 2nd, LESLIE ZEMECKIS will premiere her new book, FEUDING FAN DANCERS: FAITH BACON AND SALLY RAND, AND THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE SHOWGIRL.
LESLIE has written BOUND BY FLESH, the history of Siamese twins Violet and Daisy Hilton, which was made into an award-winning documentary. She won further acclaim for the book and film of BEHIND THE BURLY Q, with interviews no other producer could book. Then she wrote, produced, and directed the film on Mabel Stark no one else could have achieved, MABEL, MABEL, TIGER TRAINER. Co-starring are Trudy Strong, Kay Rosaire, Patricia White in her last interview, and yours truly, Mabel's apprentice.
So for a reminder, that's who Leslie Zemeckis is. How's that for a plug?
I saw Sally Rand when she was the FEATURE on the Raynell Girl Show booked on Cetlin & WIlson Railroad Carnival. Raynell was a top of the line girl show producer and had produced girl shows on Royal American before coming over to Cetlin & Wilson. Sally Rand would have been in her mid to late fifties and still had the body of a 30 year old. She had the long blonde hair and they threw a blue spot light on her to help enhance her appearance. If one had not known, you would have thought she was about 30 years of age. She packed them in at $1.00 a ticket show after show...For the finale' she came out in a black lingerie wrap around and said, "I would like to thank all of my old friends who came tonight.....And for those of you who didn't BETTER LUCK NEXT YEAR.......
