My historian/archivist friend, Leonard Farley, told me something I've never forgotten. He said, "If you've seen jealousy backstage at the opera, or the ballet, or on a film set, you have never seen jealousy until you see it in the backyard of a circus."
I can see an uneasiness on a show in any transition, but to treat you as First of Mays when you were both circus born and bred is beyond the stakeline.
Stela would take 9 to 11 of those bottles every 4 hours. I had the concoction cooking on the stove all the time. Buckles and I had to sleep with her in the truck. We would open a bale of hey and through a quilt over the top of the hey. I had to be close enough to Stela so she could touch my hair, like a baby. Then she would go right off to sleep. In till four hours later in time for the next 11 bottles. Talk about having a big baby. But I loved her. And I was really her mother.....Barbara.....
