Fond circus memories of Polack Bros. when it was the annual staple of the Tigris Shrine in Syracuse, NY. Only circus game in town. Ringling came as close as Utica, but never to Syracuse as I recall.
My memories of Utica are a little different. We jumped the Castle show out of Colorado Springs every year, to Utica, NY, so Castle could be adored by the fans who named their top for him. It was our closing date of the season, and from there we jumped all the way back to Winterquarters, in Seagoville, Texas. Nothing against Utica, but some bookings are ridiculous.
Opal was a dear to work with. I always said that if I could have the three greatest elephants to work with it would be Anna May, Opal, & Bertha. But Anna May proved to us that we didn't need any more than the " ONE AND ONLY ANNA MAY. " She was so very special. She was always so ready to do any thing and everything that we ask of her. The Woodcock elephants were not broke for mounts when I joined them. It was sort like breaking a bronc horse to saddle. When I was married to Rex Williams, I always had to do ALL mount breaking and get scent up and bruised. But with the Woodcock herd Buckles, and Col. would take turns with me doing the breaking of the mounts. Wow! That was great. And Buckles had just made chain headpieces. They were murder. The chains went all the way down the trunk where you had to sit. I was bruised from where you set down all the way down my legs. The first date we made we worked with Gee Gee. We had a dressing room together, and she said OMG Barbara HE BEATS YOU. I laughed and told her of the chain headpiece, which had to go after that date. We went back to leather. P.S. Buckles NEVER hit me. I am sure he must have felt like it sometimes. LOL....Barbara....
