Alpheus George Barnes Stonehouse was born in Lobo, Ontario, on September 1, 1862, to Thomas S. Stonehouse and Sarah Barnes. His colorful career, as Al. G. Barnes, has been documented many times in the circus press. Realizing his health was declining, he sold his show to John Ringling in 1929. Mr. Barnes died of pneumonia at age 68, on July 25, 1931, on the date ranch of his later biographer, Dave Robeson, near Indio, in California's Coachella Valley. Roberson penned the Barnes history, MASTER SHOWMAN, in 1938.
