An unusual picture but I remember seeing this every day between shows in the menagerie with Cole Bros.

I made note of this on the Beatty show. It was Benny White who first informed me that while the others slept, one elephant always remained awake, standing guard, as we see here. My fascination remains as to how the elephants decide who will sleep and which one draws guard duty, but Benny said the decision is made among themselves. He also told me elephants do well on 3 hours sleep a day.
