Alfred Court style arena
This is RBBB at the Garden in 1940 when Alfred Court debuted his three-arena act. The spec on the track is the "Return of Marco Polo." That was the last year when the spec started the show. In 1941 and thereafter is was staged well down in the program.
Note the elephant with the treasure chest on her back. I well recall that very thing from here in Atlanta in Nov. '40
Note too the shifting cages lined up against the base of the grandstand. The animals therein would not go into their conventional cage wagons until the first under canvas stand in Baltimore in May. The ones for the center ring panthers act are out of sight just inside the exit-entrance portal just across the hippodrome track.
Finally we see clearly how the arena for the panthers act is of shorter diameter than the other two
Well seasoned stagehand friends
from Boston always felt slighted
that theirs was the Boston Garden
& ours was "The Garden" (still is)
Thank you Mr. Reynolds for the date of this photo. It looks like they had to use the smaller end stages between the rings instead of the regular larger stages. p.j.
