Ann Miller practicing with Hugo Schmidt for the St. John's Hospital Fund benefit show which took place in Los Angeles on September 4,1948. Many big name Hollywood movie stars of that time participated in this special performance.
The St. John’s Hospital Fund benefit show was organized by bandleader Kay Kyser. There was a special rehearsal for the movies stars, all of whom had volunteered to take part in the show. Among the stars who participated were Sabu, Barbara Stanwyck, Claudette Colbert, Lex Barker (who was the current Tarzan), Maureen O’Sullivan, Greer Garson, Ed Wynn, Nelson Eddy, Robert Cummings, Esther Williams, Margaret O’Brien, Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra, Van Johnson, Red Skelton, Ronald Colman, Gary Cooper, Buster Keaton, Harpo Marx, Carmen Miranda (who danced around the track with Ernie Burch), Danny Kaye, Burt Lancaster, Bob Hope, Elizabeth Taylor, Ann Blythe, Rosalind Russell, Boris Karloff, Desi Arnaz, Glenn Ford, Alan Ladd, Loretta Young, Peter Lawford, Van Haflin, Jeannette MacDonald, Lucille Ball, Edgar Bergen, Ronald Reagan (who served as guest ringmaster), Dennis Day, Ray Milland, Jack Carson, Lassie the dog, and Burt Lancaster. Harry James led the band. (As many of you know, his father had been a circus bandleader.) Ann Miller appeared in the finale, dancing with Modoc. Even more stars were in the audience. (I wonder if DeMille was there? He probably was.)
It might have been easier
to mention who wasn't there
