John Carroll was known to elephant men, and to everyone around those Hugo shows, but lived anonymously to the rest of the world. Okie Carr told me John never went to the front end on payday, and his meager earnings accumulated over his many seasons. His great legacy was asking D.R. Miller to help him secure a final resting place for veteran showmen like himself who had no one to see to their burials. Thus evolved Showman's Rest, at Mount Olivet Cemetery, in Hugo, where thanks mostly to John Carroll, many like himself may rest in peace, not forgotten after all.
