From Mark Rosenthal

I came across this photo of "Black Diamond" on the Atterbury Show in 1924 with trainer Curly Pritchett.
The back of the photo says Diamond was 22.

Interesting picture.
The chains must have been for decoration since it doesn't restrict him in any way.

According to Slim Lewis’ book, Curley Prichett played a key role in the events that transpired in Corsicana, Texas that led to Black Diamond having to be executed. According to Lewis, Prichett, who was living in Corsicana, cajoled Diamond’s regular handler Jack O’Grady intro letting him (Prichett) lead Diamond from the train to the lot so he could impress his friends. Without O’Grady there to keep him in line, Diamond eventually turned on Prichett and then on Eva Donohoe, who approached Diamond after Prichett said it was OK. It's all described in Lewis' book ELEPHANT TRAMP (aka I LOVED ROGUES).

Foley & Burk Carnival Co. in 1917 employed Homer Douglas Prickett as a cook (WW I draft reg. on Ancestry). HD Prickett is the name used in Corsicana news reports in 1929. Homer Douglas Prickett was from Fort Worth, as was HD "Curly" Prickett and I conclude therefore the same person as Curly "Pritchett" (sic). So, Prickett, not Pritchett. Unless he used the alias to avoid teasing, due to suggestive meaning of the name?

I'm writing a book about a tight rope walker (non-circus) who died in Corsicana in 1884, and am including the Eva Donohoo story, errr, Black Diamond story of 1929 as a chapter in the book. Something about Corsicana.

Can I get permission to reproduce photos from the blog, please? respond to jimyarin@verizon.net thank you
