Did they carry a fight partner
or recruit local village idiots
I'm sure everybody was in on the fix.
Some of our standout privileges are encounters that are brief but indelible. One of my most memorable was meeting and shaking the hand of the Champ at his famed Jack Dempsey's Broadway Bar, in 1974. Inside, his walls were murals of the many famous names he had met, had as guests, and worked with. I was studying all the famous faces, Lana Turner, Gene Autry, his ring opponents, and was looking for a depiction of Clyde Beatty, when suddenly I was overshadowed by a gentle giant who extended his hand. I'm 5'6", he was way over 6 feet, thick-set and brawny even then, and his hand was like a 12" skillet. It was quite a moment in the presence of a legend, but very shortly someone hustled him off for business. This was his 2nd bar and restaurant, the one seen in the first GODFATHER movie. It was torn down not long after I met him there. Dempsey died in 1983, at 87.
This should be Sells-Floto in 1919.
