I'm not aware that Safari ever worked in an act at the Detroit Zoo but he must have been taught some basic commands- foot- trunk- etc.
I seem to recall hearing that they were prepared to build a wagon to fetch him back and forth from the train but as it turned out he was quite manageable.
As mentioned before I spent an afternoon with Eddie Allen at Parley Baer's home trying to get some Cole Show information but all he wanted to talk about was buying an island off the coast of California.
From what BARBARA has shared, if anyone could have worked this guy, it was Jean Allen.
Parley Baer and Eddie Allen bought some acreage out here, in Lancaster, California. What actually became of this holding became a clouded issue when Parley passed on. I cannot testify if he was in on the island deal with Allen, but they did have a long business association. One mystery no one has explained to me is--how did Eddie Allen segue from life as a circus elephant man to that of a powerful influence in the Hollywood picture business?
The wagon was built- it had his picture on the side and ended up being used for another purpose. I will try to send you a picture of it.
Who was Jean Allen's teacher?
Buckles, you should have been more understanding. What else is there for a retired elephant trainer to talk about beside's how he will spend his riches? If Mr. Allen had done ride's for a few year's he most likely would have been talking about buying two island's and a medium sized city, or at least the King Ranch. Damn right show business is all right. I told John Milton Herriott a number of year's ago that he should have spent more time getting a handle on those African's instead of knocking them. That seemed to be where the money was.
