These are 2 of the 4 most
important women in your life
At 1 time I thought you said
that this ball was aluminum
welded from tapered segments
Chic, They Didn't build things out of aluminum in those days.
Just Good Ole' Steel.
DC-3s were not made of steel Jim
(but snow shovels were)
I thought Buckles had mentioned
some very good friend that was
able to pattern & sculpt these
precision balls out of aluminum
Aluminum welding started during WWII. They had a hard time with temps and you will only see aluminum welded engine mounts, wheel set mounts, etc. on planes built during the war. All sheet work was with aluminum rivots on aluminum airframes. Lone Star Flight Museum used to have a good display of engines, etc. and I was surprised to see all the early material, as I was thinking all of it would have been cast aluminum. But they did have some earlier welded parts on the large bombers. Again, they were engine mounts, which were bolted to the airframes, etc.
