In my string at Jungleland, our main breeding pair were Hanzie and Emir. In consecutive years, they delivered 3 litters of 4 cubs. Mabel Stark came over and along with Benny Bennett, schooled me in the meticulous rearing of newborns. Lucky for us, Emir was consistently a nurturing mother, but I still had shifting and cleaning duties for her family. Her 4th litter of 4 was born after Mabel had been forced out, but I called her regularly for counseling, wanting her to feel needed and involved. It was not enough. The last litter had been born on March 28th,1968, and Mabel was found dead of suicide on April 20th.
