My mother and I saw the Ringling show in 1948 and I remember the band being seated on the ground behind the center ring between Concello's new seat wagons.
The performers entered thru this passageway for their acts and Spec came in thru a back door situated at the round end of the Big Top.

RBBB band. Merle's in the aisle in the back for the photo. That's Max C. Ring in the front row on piccolo. He was another of Merle's all stars.

Here's what Merle talked about all his life on RB--where the bandstand should go. Intense debate is a polite term for a topic of repetitive warfare every winter in Sarasota. This set-up, with the band in the audience seating will remain my least favorite.
